National Margarita Day!!! Woo Hoo!!!

Surely many are wondering why a cold, fruity, summery drink such as the margarita is commemorated in February. The dead of winter! For some people, margarita day is more likely to be celebrated if it were June. But for those who live in New York, where the sidewalks are currently covered in dog-soiled snow that, they will understand the sort of resemblance of a foul frozen cocktail,

According to studies, Americans on average drink 185,000 margaritas per hour, making it almost a patriotic duty to imbibe. National Margarita Day might not be a real holiday, considering it’s not on Wikipedia, the decider of all reality. But plenty of people out there were delighted to have an excuse to enjoy an adult beverage after a long day at work.

I think I'll make a pitcher of them today and have a few friends over!!

Tell me, what's your favorite Margarita? Mine is the classic original with Patron tequila!!

A Valentine Give-a-Way!

Well, Ladies, it's been awhile since I have written on my blog. My life has been very hectic for the past few months, but I am ready to get back to writing on my blog as least on a weekly basis.

In celebration of

Valentine's Day

I am having give-a-way! I decided to make these in black and white as opposed to the traditional red/pink/white, so they can stay out all year long. After all, hugs and kisses should be celebrated all year long!! Each letter is 8" high and is made from chipboard and scrapbook paper and sealed with a protective coat of varnish.

Welcoming Ethan Brae Into The World

I haven't been on in such a long time as life has been very full for me the past year....but I did want to share with you a precious gift that came to us on Friday.

I have a new grandson!! He came a bit early (33 weeks), so is very tiny. Ethan was born on Friday, September 10, 2010, weighing in at 2 pounds 12 ounces and 15 3/4" long. He is doing amazingly well! He is beautiful and is holding his own. He will have to be in NICU until he gets bigger and stronger. Please pray for him as he grows and becomes stronger so that he can go home to be with his family. Big brother Evan thinks he is the cutest thing and goes to visit him daily. I never knew one child could have so many "big brother" shirts!!! :)

I hope to be writing more and keeping up with my blog. I also hope to having a "Give-away" soon! I do read your blogs late at night while tying to wind down from a hectic day. So many inspirations and ideas out there!!

I will be joining BNOTP for Met Monday soon with items I have been making changes to over the past year. So keep an eye out!

Red Velvet Cupcakes and Chocolate Covered Strawberries!

Here are photos of cupcakes I baked today. They are the Red Velvet with Cream Cheese frosting, then topped with a Chocolate Covered Strawberry!! I had to make 148 of them for a customer! Whew...I am tired!

Lemon Meringue Cupcakes and Recipes!

I made Lemon Meringue Cupcakes for the Superbowl party! YUMMO!! They were a big hit! I guess I'll put these on the menu!

The Recipe:

Ingredients:
Makes 24 cupcakes
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
2 cups sugar
5 extra-large eggs
3 cups self-rising cake flour
1 cup buttermilk
3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

2 tablespoons lemon zest

meringue topping

lemon pie filling
castor sugar

lemon wedges

Directions:
1.Preheat oven to 325 degrees.

2. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat butter until softened. With the mixer on medium, add eggs and sugar; beat until well combined. With mixer on low speed, add flour in three parts, alternating with buttermilk and beginning and ending with flour. Stir in lemon zest and lemon juice.
3. Fill prepared muffin cups three-quarters full with batter. Transfer muffin tins to oven and bake until a cake tester inserted into the center of a cupcake comes out clean, 20 to 25 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack and let cupcakes cool completely in muffin cups.

4. Using a # tip, fill the middle of each cupcake with lemon pie filling.

5. Finish off with the merengue topping.

6. Garnish with a thin wedge of lemon that was dredged in Castor Sugar

Pie Filling and Meringue

1 1/3 cups granulated sugar, divided
3 tablespoons cornstarch
1 1/2 cups cold water
3 egg yolks, slightly beaten
grated zest of 1 lemon
1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
1 tablespoon butter
3 egg whites

Pie Filling:
In a saucepan combine 1 cup sugar with cornstarch. Gradually stir in the cold water until smooth. Stir in the beaten egg yolks. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly, and continue to boil and stir for 1 minute. Remove from heat. Stir in the lemon peel, lemon juice and butter. Let cool.

Meringue:

Beat egg whites until foamy. Gradually beat in 1/3 cup sugar; continue beating until stiff peaks form. Spread the egg white meringue mixture over the fulling, sealing to edge of crust. Bake in a preheated 350° oven for about 15 minutes, or until golden brown.

54th Metamorphosis Monday and a Rosey Candelabra

Bought a pair of these candelabras a fews years back...they were missing something on them....and I could never remove the glue. This weekend I got them out and ,made roses out of polymer clay. I think they turned out pretty nice!

Had a frame and a large plate (picked the plate up for $3). Framed the plate! Saw a lonely teacup...grabbed it and tied it to the frame with pretty ribbon! (Ned to cut the ribbon a bit)I am really enjoying it. It's in my dining room! Simple!

Metamorphosis Monday and a Settee

I found this cutie at a thrift shop. It was rusty and broken in some areas. Sorry, forgot to take before pics!

I cleaned and welded the rusty and broken areas, primed it, then gave it a nice shiny coat of red rustoleum paint! Isn't it just too cute? When time permits, I will make cushions for it for the seat and back. I think I have some vintage tablecloths that might work! Stay tuned!

Updated Valentine Tree and a Gift From Blogger!

I really didn't care for the red tree afterall, so I decorated my Radko tree instead. I like it better!! It shows off the ornaments much better! I need to get more checked silk fabric to make a skirt for my tree.

See the black and white candle in the last photo? It was sent to me by Sarah of Hyacinths for The Soul! What a great surprise to find this in my mailbox today! So sweet...I love it!
If you haven't been to her blog, you MUST run....don't walk over and see all the fabulous photos and her writings about her home and life. It is always full of life!

I also changed my blog...borrowed a background until I have time to create my own...I did change my header image a bit...I am liking it better with a little pizazz!! Don't you?

Valentine CC Tree and Ornaments

Here is a peek at my CC heart ornaments. I added them to my red tree along with the ball ornaments and ribbon. The ornaments are 3" with CC and Stripes/CC and some with red glass bead dangles and outlined in 18K gold. All topped off with a red satin ribbon.

Too Much To Do!!?

Well, this morning I started out taking down the Christmas decorations.....did the entrance and the outdoor wreaths...went to retrieve the boxes for storage and saw a box of "to do projects"....nicked the decorations and proceeded to go through the to do box....found a wooden bowl....went outdoors to prime it...went back indoors to get sandpaper...found a candlestick...thought it would look cute redone....went to the bar area...found an old crystal bowl....it sat neatly in the candlestick....went to the scrapbook room to grab my adhesive dots (AD)...put them together...turned out really cute (note to self: pick up more votives).

Went back to get that sandpaper....saw a wooden cake pedestal....took it inside...grabbed a cloche....fits perfect!! Took the non working screw out...filled the hole...waiting for it to dry to sand and prime. Now, back to get that sandpaper!! Finally sanded the wooden bowl...it's on the paint table to be painted B/W checks.

Now, back to get that box for the decorations....oops! found another cute iron candlestick....went to my dining room to my cabinet...found a nice little Homer Laughlin plate....grabbed a tiny cloche...they fit!! Now, to go grab those ADs...put that together..add a Fitz and Floyd rabbit...too cute!!

While in the cabinet...saw tea cups...decided to add china cups to my dining chandelier! Now, let's see...which cups to use? Grabbed the ones displayed under a cloche....wanted more color...went to the kitchen and took....no....borrowed a couple from my canisters (note to self: look for red transferware cups to replace).

Went to sun room to find black and white checked ribbon in the chest...found some..not really the one I wanted...but will do till I order more...went back to dining room....added the cups to the chandy....looks really cute!! Now, the chandy needs some shades...will have to buy clips and make some in near future when I add the sleeve and medallion.

Now, back to the decorations!! Finally, packed most...will wait for housekeeper to do rest...

I am exhausted!!!!!

Remington was not too happy about the Santa hat!!

My Old/New Chandy

I bought this vintage chandelier on Craigslist about 6 months ago....cleaned it up and painted it red. All of the original prisms were in tact. It sat in the corner of the dining room ever since. Today my DH surprised me and put it up!! Little did he know, I had to add a sleeve and the ceiling medallion (old frame) first. I will redo it next week while he is gone. I didn't have the heart to tell him!! Isn't it sparkly and beautiful? I have a before pic somewhere .

Holiday Decorating and M-C Courtly Check

The candles are the LED ones...I used my art and created a scene....printed it on velumn and wrapped around the candle and tied with ribbon. This way I can interchange the scenes according to the holiday!

This is line art/watercolor I made..the date on it is 1983...found it in a folder the other day...it's always like Christmas at my house...I am always finding things I made or partially made... How fun!! I need to reframe it later....it's what I had on hand.

I love this time of year, even though it's still so hot here. I thought I would post some photos of what I have done so far for the fall season. It's not much, but I love it!!

Just Had To Have These! Fantastic Bargain!!

Well, I went to Target to buy some garden stuff...left with these instead! Weren't my colors...had no clue what I would do with them....but had to have them! Why, you ask! ? There were 2 absolutely 2 great reasons why...according to moi!! First, they were on sale...sale....sale....sale....and on sale again! I couldn't resist the 25....50...75...75...75% off! I paid less than $3 each for $25 pillows!!! All with down filled inserts. Second, well, I can't buy down filled pillow inserts for that much at the fabric store! Let alone the beautiful fabrics (linen) and make them for that much!!

Turned out, when I got home...they did match..the darker pinks, look more red...(see the tablecloth I have next to them on the top photo)...so on my back porch they went ....at least for the summer...then, I will make some fallish ones and replace the covers. They have quickly become my favorite thing! At least for now. They also have a runner to match, but it wasn't on sale..still $17.99...so I will wait and watch for that baby!!

16th Sunday Favorites....and Cloches

So, here are a few of my cloches....love them, can't EVER have enough of them. They are THE greatest invention (according to moi...LOL) You can display anything you want, whether it be pretties, food, plants...the possibilities are endless.

MMMM....BLT Dip Recipe

This recipe is for BLT Dip w/ toast points. This is my boyfriend, John's recipe. It is always requested and goes fast! Had to make this for a birthday party tonight, so thought I would share this recipe with all my blogging friends.

BLT Dip

1 1/2 c Mayonnaise
1 1/2 c Sour cream
1 1/2 c tomatoes (seeded and diced)
1 lb bacon (cut in small pieces and fried to a crisp)
Bacon drippings
Bread (any type of will do, toasted or soft. We sometimes use pita bread cut in wedges)

Let bacon/drippings cool down completely. Add 1st 3 ingredients to bacon and mix thoroughly (reserve 2Tbls each of bacon and tomatoes for garnish). Pour into a bowl and garnish. This is really delicious and taste just like a BLT samdwich! Taste best if you make at least 1 hour ahead to marry the flavors.

29th Metamorphosis Monday...a Partial Met!

I have joined Between Naps on the Porch for Metamorphosis Monday. This is still a work in progress. I have been working on it for about 5 months now. Just thought I would share the process with you. It did have 2 drawers in the middle. Took them out to add room for a shelf and a light. I have a photo with drawers somewhere I'll add when I find it. It took more than I thought to reconstruct it, but I am really loving the way it is turning out.

Mary over at Dear Little Red House is so graciously hosting Mosaic Mondays. Please take some time and visit her and all of the wonderful mosaics up this week on various blogs.

I have always been fascinated by these tiny homes. I knew I could NEVER live in one. But as I get older and the "material things" are no longer as important, I wonder...could I be comfortable in one of these "Shotgun Houses"? I mean, I could really add a lot of architectual detail and really cuten (is that a word?) it up! I thought I would share with you today my love of the Shotgun House. Popular folklore says that these homes got their names because if you fired a shotgun through the front door it would exit through the back without hitting any walls. The style is characterized by houses that are one to two rooms wide, and three to four rooms deep with no interior hallways- each room opens directly onto the next. However, the doorways of each room are not always aligned, so you’d better check before you decide to put that folklore to the test!
The architectural style was imported from tropical Haiti, where the cost-effective and unique structure drew in the air to circulate through each room. The homes were typically raised a foot or two off the ground, which also allowed air to pass beneath, further cooling it and keeping water away from the main structure. With New Orleans’ Gulf and river breezes, the benefits of using the shotgun style were apparent, and it soon became the most popular housing style in the South from the end of the Civil War (1861-65) through the early 1920s.
There are many varieties of shotguns, including the single, double, and camelback shotgun. It remains the most popular housing style in New Orleans.

They cook so well and evenly....like...I'lm gonna use it...right? Wrong! It will look oh so nice in my Courtly Check kitchen!

What's Your Passion?

It's been a while since I have posted...mainly due to a great loss in the family and taking care of my niece and fishing!! I am anxious to get back to blogging once again and play catch up on all of the wonderful blog happenings!! Looking forward to seeing new ideas and read what all of you have been up to.

Here is a photo of my Passion vine flower that grows on my conservatory. I wanted red flowers, but I got these, so was surprised when this color showed up!! It's still beautiful! ...here's a little about these wonderfully unique flowering vines:

I pruned this back last week and its already getting top heavy again. I’ll have to prune it again this week. Passion flower flowers on new growth not old, so if you do not prune you won’t get as large of a batch of flowers. I usually prune back once every 2 weeks, depending on it's growth rate. It is a fast growing vine and you’ll need to give it a quick prune almost weekly and a serious prune monthly during the growing season.
These are tough to germinate from seed, you are better off buying a plant or rooting a cutting off a friend’s plant.
Passion flower dies back in the late fall, leaves turn yellow and fall off and it leafs back out very early in the spring. This one has been flowering for over a month now.
The flowers are amazing, layers upon layers of petals and a large stigma with five stamen around it.
Full to part sun is best for this plant, however mine is in mostly shade except for late afternoon for a few hours. Flowers open when the sun hits the plant.
It prefers moist soil not too wet, not too dry.
It will need support, I have wires running behind the plant that I wrap the vines around.
Butterflies love passion flower vines and you will have caterpillars and cocoons on on the plant. I try not to remove the cocoons when pruning, but that’s a personal preference. {Butterflies that use passion flower vines as hosts include: Gulf Fritillay & Varigated Fritillary, Heliconians } Hummingbirds like this flower as well.
Fruits are edible and usually cooked, they do not taste well raw. They are like blackberries in flavor when cooked into a pie or cobbler.
There are over 600 species of passion flowers found through out the tropical and subtropical climate.
Some passion flower species can only be pollinated by interacting with hummingbirds. The hummingbirds and these species of passion flowers have a symbiotic relationship. Many caterpillars feed on the leaves before changing to butterflies, many other insects find the foliage to be toxic. This toxin also makes the caterpillars toxic to their predators.
Propagate by seed in the spring, or by cutting in the summer.
Look carefully at your passion flower next time it blooms. Close to the leaf base you’ll see a couple small bumps that are yellowish. These are the size of butterfly eggs. Since butterflies won’t lay eggs close together the passion vine is attempting to trick the butterfly into thinking eggs have already been laid there.

My Inspiration is from Tina at Cherry Hill Cottage

My inspiration came from Tina at Cherry Hill Cottage . She had her little porch swing all dolled up painted in RED and cute pillows tossed on it. I adopted this house when I moved in with John... the yard was a disaster....we are working on it slowly but surely. This swing was tossed aside and the canopy was missing (later found out the gardener took it to the dumpster). I wasn't ging to let that stop me..I knew I could make this ugly duckling pretty again. It sat around for over a year until I saw Tina's swing..that was it!! The next thing I knew, I was painting it red and making pillows for it. These were all of 10 minute pillows out of dish towels I found today at Ross. I will make some cuter ones when I have more time. So there you have it...my first INSPIRATIONAL WEDNESDAY project.

Well, I NEVER!!! Okay...I WILL ACCEPT!!

While waiting for Marshall's to open this morning, I went over to Ross (I was in the mood to spend money and didn't want to wait). I was standing there reading the signs on the windows waiting for that store to open. Then I saw it!!! Yep..saw it, read it, mulled it over through my mind and thought...YIPEEE!! I get 10% off of my total purchase today!! Then, I woke up and came to my senses...YIKES!!! I am now in "that box". You know, the one that reads 55-65!! I am now at THAT age..the one where everywhere you go...you are now considered a ....mmm....shall I dare speak those words....those that I have avoided for 55 years!!! Yes...I am now considered a ..."SENIOR CITIZEN"!!!

Dictionary: senior citizen (sēn'yər-sĭt'ĭ-zən) adj
n. A person of relatively advanced age, especially a person at or over the age of retirement.

What? Where? When did this happen? When did 55 become the NEW RETIREMENT age?
I must have missed something somewhere, sometime? Perhaps I just have Alzheimers...or dimentia...and don't remember hearing about the change.
Okay....I have calmed down before I have a heart attack..seizure....or something that will send me to the hospital, then the nursing home!!

I have only just begun living!! Really...I even have a check list (see below)

Kids gone..check!
Have grandchildren... Can give them back...check!
Can go places without getting a babysitter or asking permission first...check
Have money to go places....check!
Home paid for...check!
Can play all day if I want to....check!
Can blog all day if I chose to do so....check!

Can drink Martinis at noon if I want to....check!

Okay...so 55 isn't so bad after all. I'll be more than happy to take all of your discounts! This way, I can spend more on Blog Giveaways!!! Check...Check...Check!!!

My change is the little console table (sitting against the wall in a brown tone). I painted this in the Mackenzie-Childs style and added pieces of broken pottery shards to the legs. I also made tassels and added them all around. Oh...this goes to my sisiter who this loves this type of painted furniture..I prefer the shaby style! Kool-Aid is Kool!!

Who woulda thunk?

Original purpose: Quenching your thirst.

Aha! Use: Cleaning lime deposits and iron stains inside the dishwasher. Pour a packet of lemonade Kool-Aid (the only flavor that works) into the detergent cup and run the (empty) dishwasher.

Reward: Citric acid in the mix wipes out stains; you don't have to.

I ran my dishwasher with a few dishes in it (too lazy to take them out first) and my glassware was sparkling...better than I have ever seen them and I just had 2 packets of Lemonade Kool-Aid in it. I am impresssed!!

Target Birdies on Holiday!

This morning I woke up to the tune of "How Much is That Kitty In the Window"....only to find that Fred and Ginger had danced on into the sun room and was playing the piano!! How nice it was to wake up to such lovely music!

Once, they were done playing the piano, they flew out the door and rushed right over to the bird feeder and had some breakfast. Then, they went over to the front entrance where they found my container water garden and drank and splashed in the fresh running water to their hearts delight!

Then, it was off to visit friends for the day. They first stopped off at Dusty and Musty's to see how the new babies were doing. They were just born a week ago. After hearing they were doing great, they flew on over to Maggie and Harold's place to see what they were up to.

After a long afternoon visiting friends, it was time to go back home and feed their little ones and sit on their own nest for a while.

This has certainly been a very long day, so Fred and Ginger decided to take a dip in the hot tub and relax their aching feathers, then on over to take a well desrved nap in the hammock before heading back home to the little ones.

Fred and Ginger wanted to thank Between Naps on The Porch for hosting such a lovely vacation. It was long overdue and they needed a break!!

Veggies From My Garden

Here are some photos of my veggies from my garden. We removed the last of the cabbage, both red and green along with bell pepper, red bulb onions, yellow and zucchini squash, bush beans, lettuce (several types), dill, arrugula (love that nutty taste), sweet basil, parsley, cilantro, chives, mint and chocolate mint.

We end up sharing with our neighbors as we can't eat it all!! I will be making tomato sauce with the tomatoes I already par boiled, seeded and skinned along with the fresh basil and other delicious herbs.

I want to thank Sandi for my award. I was away camping and canoing with friends on the Guadelupe river this weekend and came home to find this award. How very special I felt!

There are a couple of things that comes along with the acceptance of this fabulous award which are that I am to list 7 things that bring joy into my life and I am to award the Kreativ Blogger Award to 7 other blogsites.

My Joys In Life:

I love waking up every morning to my boyfriend's singing. It truly makes my heart smile and starts my day off in a magical way.

I enjoy walking on the beach with the sand squishing in between my toes.

I enjoy my grandson, watching him grow and learn each and every day. He is truly the reason for my being.

I enjoy meeting new friends through all of the different venues offered to us today. They are each very special to me.

I love waking up in the morning and going into my garden and picking fresh vegetables for the day's meals.

I love the smell of fresh bread baking in the oven and knowing that soon I will be able to slice it and spread it with sweet creamery butter and sink my teeth into it!

I enjoy passing the time by reading others blogsites and discovering new ones. There is so much creativity and diversity out there and I am so blessed to be apart of the blogging world.

My Porch magazine arrived the other day and can you believe I actually laid it aside and forgot about it? But what a treat when I came across it while rearranging my rooms. If you haven't seen this magazine yet, you need to, as it is all about the wonderful women who blog and have businesses. Porch was started solely to promote bloggers and their businesses. It's limited to "Eye Candy" and that's such a nice break from all the advertising and articles in those "other magazines". You will truly get your money's worth! Where Are The Days Going?

Well, I thought I would be able to get to my blog daily...okay, well at least weekly. But there is so much to do and the days seem to be getting shorter and shorter.

I have been painting the inside of my house. Rich buttery walls with pure white trim. It looks so fresh and clean. I didn't take before pictures, as usual. I am always just diving into new projects and the camera is NEVER around. I also found two wonderful shabby pieces that will go perfectly in the dining area. See the pictures below. I am still working on filling the cabinet and playing around. It won't look the same tomorrow!

Now, my new project (in between all the house painting) is to remake and paint a console I found on Craigslist. Yesterday I took the drawers out (to be repurposed at a later date), removed the legs and gutted it. Today I will attempt to smooth out the carved wood in front. It doesn't work in the design I will be painting it in, so I'll have to redo it (it won't come off after many wacks with a hammer...hehehe).

So High ho high ho...it's off to work I go...yadda...yadda.yadda.
